Oddities

This vase is very creative…but do you really want to drink from a cabbage leaf? Cabbage juice doesn’t sound super-tasty.

But I do like finding cool vintage oddities like this. FUN.

Quilted Vintage Goodness

quilt-like goodness

I  love to quilt. Going to the thrift store and looking for vintage cloth for quilting is fun. It’s always great to look at the quilt when it’s finished and reminisce on all the places where you acquired the fabric.

Recently, instead of just searching for vintage cloth to make quilts, I have been looking for quilt-like or quilting-inspired objects.

It’s an extension of my love of vintage cloth, and quilting. A perfect pair.

When to Upcycle…

Sometimes you will find a cool vintage item that is great, but not perfect. For me, this is the best time to upcycle the item. Take it and reconfigure it in some new cool way. It’s an opportunity to be green and creative.

Have you upcycled something lately?

Old School Christmas Ornaments

Next to family and food, my favorite thing about Christmas is decorating the tree and enjoying other trimmings. Last year, I found many cool ornaments in Cambridge Mass, at the Salvation Army on Mass Ave. I am sure they will have plenty more this year if you want to check them out.

They are very cool. Here are a couple on my tree. They remind me of home and growing up. (tear drop, and smile)

A tip if you are looking for cool vintage Christmas ornaments…wait until after Christmas. The ornaments are cheaper, and there is less competition.

Container Collecting

For some strange reason, I love collecting empty vintage containers. Go figure.

I especially like small ones. I like to imagine what went inside them. Sometimes I use them to hold stuff. Sometimes I just like to look at them. I think this one is particularly elegant.

Do you have any quirky things that you collect?

Unselfish Thrift Shopping

It’s better to give than it is to receive. I’ve heard  this before and I’m pretty sure you have. This vintage shopping season

the adorable scooter

the adorable scooter

I made a decision that reflects this ideal.

I saw this amazing wood scooter at the thrift store. It was cool looking, in good condition and all around adorable. And it was only FIVE DOLLARS! However, I already have a rocking horse that is very similar. It took some self-control, but I walked away from the purchase.

I figured that some other kid will need it more, so I should leave it.

I already have something similar. There’s no need to be selfish. I want to be a vintage collector and not a selfish vintage horder. There is a thin line.

Vintage VIP

This was another new vintage experience for me…an invitation to a VIP sale….AT THE SALVATION ARMY. Because of the recession, more shoppers are being turned on to thrift stores. They are looking for good deals, and for some type of cultural meaning that they can’t get from newer clothes, maybe nostalgia.

I think these newer shoppers are great. Even though the prices may go up because demand is higher, I am happy that regular Americans are choosing to make the switch. Welcome VIPs.
