“Oh! Don’t throw that out! I’ll take it”

This is my favorite thing to say to friends and family when they are thinking of throwing out cool old stuff. This is the record player that I got from my dad. Everyone has upgraded to CD players and MP3 players, so if you’re lucky, you might be able to get a cool old media player from your childhood home for free…

Something to think about as you go home for the holidays. Your best gift may be the something that you rescue from the trash.

Yeah, I have a lot of stuff. I am a truly a ‘stuff-person.’ Im not a ‘pack-rat,’ at least that’s what I tell my self. I am a collector.

Vintage dresses! I love them, they are super cool. When I wear them, I feel womanly, and feminine. I feel special and unique. In my collection, I focus on color, fun, ease of use and wear, and comfort.

And when I wear them, I feel pretty, oh so pretty…..

date night, goodies on fantastic vintage plates

This week, I am thinking about how to collect and integrate vintage pieces into your everyday life. One fun way that I do this is to use cutesy vintage plates on my weekly date nights.

We have a little kid, and it’s hard to leave the house like we used to on our date nights. So instead we tuck him in, and get out the special vintage plates. We cut up cheese, fruit and other goodies, and enjoy them in interesting vintage dishes and glasses.

It may not be the same as going out to the movies, but it’s just as special.

is vintage-only the way to go?

I am flirting with the idea of only purchasing vintage clothes from here on out. No new clothes. (With the special exception of underwear.)

I am not sure if  this is cool, or extreme. I just feel like an American that consumes way too much. I need to reduce in some way. Maybe this will be my new years resolution for 2011…

retro records are worth the dig

In many thrift stores, you will find a media section. This is my favorite place to discover new music.

Collecting records is fun not only because of the music, but also because of the album art. In our next apartment, I’ll probably frame some and hang them on the wall.

This vase is very creative…but do you really want to drink from a cabbage leaf? Cabbage juice doesn’t sound super-tasty.

quilt-like goodness

I  love to quilt. Going to the thrift store and looking for vintage cloth for quilting is fun. It’s always great to look at the quilt when it’s finished and reminisce on all the places where you acquired the fabric.

Recently, instead of just searching for vintage cloth to make quilts, I have been looking for quilt-like or quilting-inspired objects.

It’s an extension of my love of vintage cloth, and quilting. A perfect pair.

vintage with a twist

Sometimes you will find a cool vintage item that is great, but not perfect. For me, this is the best time to upcycle the item. Take it and reconfigure it in some new cool way. It’s an opportunity to be green and creative.
